Introduction of the Amharic Alphabets

......The Amharic language is composed of over 200 alphabets. However, we will only focus on the most significant and commonly used ones in this program thereby reducing that number to minimum. The alphabets are organized by rows and columns. Why don't you click on the button at the bottom of the page and take a quick look at the alphabets ...

......As you can see, there are always seven to eight columns for every row. You see, the Amharic alphabets are grouped by the way they sound (Note: exceptions to this rule will be discussed later on). There are 7 to 8 letters per group and about 28 groups all together. With this many letters, you will be able to generate almost any sound imaginable.
......In the upcoming lessons, we will introduce you to rules and concepts that were developed based on the way the alphabets are arranged and their unique relationship to one another. These concepts will make Amharic easy to understand. We will let you in on a little secret... most Ethiopians that speak this beautiful language don't even know what you are about to learn. Surprised? Well, since Ethiopians were taught Amharic at an early age, they have not taken the time to stop and analyze the language in it's simplest form!
